Magnesium for sleep: a balanced look without promises

Good sleep starts with a routine; a supplement should address a specific need.

Magnesium plays a role in nerve and muscle function. However, there are few high-quality studies of magnesium for insomnia. It is not possible to promise that glycinate or another form will improve sleep onset.

If your diet does not supply enough magnesium, discuss a supplement with a health professional. Check the amount of elemental magnesium per serving on the label, not the total weight of the compound.

If sleep is regularly disrupted, consider your routine, evening caffeine and the causes of anxiety. Magnesium does not replace treatment for chronic insomnia.

Before use

With kidney disease, take magnesium only after consulting a doctor. It can interfere with the absorption of some antibiotics; the required spacing depends on the medicine.

Educational information. Supplements do not replace a balanced diet or medical care.

Side by side

Compare the same ingredients and serving sizes. Extract weight, plant powder and active compound amounts are different measures. A larger number does not mean a better effect. Check the label for full ingredients and precautions.
