Psyllium: fibre that needs water

Psyllium is a soluble fibre used to relieve constipation, but following the directions matters.

Psyllium absorbs liquid and increases stool bulk. Start according to the specific product’s instructions; a sudden increase in fibre may cause bloating.

Do not swallow the powder dry. Mix it with enough liquid and drink it straight away. MedlinePlus specifies at least 240 ml of liquid when taking it.

Fibre can affect the absorption of medicines. Ask a pharmacist about the required interval. Constipation lasting more than a week, blood in the stool or significant pain requires medical assessment.

Before use

Do not start psyllium on your own if you have swallowing difficulties, suspected bowel obstruction or a fluid restriction.

Side by side

Compare the same ingredients and serving sizes. Extract weight, plant powder and active compound amounts are different measures. A larger number does not mean a better effect. Check the label for full ingredients and precautions.
